A Life-Changing Night

I’ve always been a romantic. An optimist too. But sometimes, things don’t work out the way you thought they would. You can end up feeling like a stupid fool, a discarded plaything. I’ve heard it happens more when you’re younger.
I was twenty-three at the time, fresh out of college, playin’ cocktail piano five nights a week and high on life. Actually, I was high on Josey, my drop-dead gorgeous, slightly older girlfriend. Playin’ my heart out I was that night, her birthday. I was waiting for her to come in so I could give her present. I had a beautiful night planned for the two of us after I got off.
We’d been dating for about a year. She was an on-air, television host for the local network news. Sure, I was just a piano player at the time, but I knew someday I’d be a successful composer. I was writing music for a documentary film about waterfowl on the Chesapeake Bay.
It was a slow Friday night. I didn’t pay much attention to the old guy in an Eagles jacket sitting at the bar. As it turned out, I should have. He pretty much changed my life.
